Owners of superyachts are arguably some of the richest people in the world. As such, whenever they cruise into port, they are pretty much accustomed to turning heads, and being welcomed with open arms. However, as was recently proved in Molokai, that is not always the case.
According to local CBS television affiliate, WAFB-9, billionaire tech investor Yuri Milner’s 350 foot luxury yacht was blocked from docking at a Molokai harbor on November 24th. According to the WAFB report, although Molokai is known as the “Friendly Isle,” a group of residents and activists told the vessel’s crew they would not be welcome here.
“All I saw was a possible threat,” said Hawaiian activist Walter Ritte. “We want to protect this space,” added his wife, Loretta Ritte.
The report went on to say, it was “unclear” whether Milner’s intention was to dock the massive superyacht at the Kaunakakai marina, but, “he was quickly turned away after Molokai residents told him he was not welcomed.”
“We’re too small to have something as big as this. Especially if it’s someone who has a lot of power because they have a lot of money,” said Loretta. The Rittes said it wasn’t a planned protest, rather a spontaneous gathering when residents saw the superyacht heading for Kaunakakai Harbor. They said about a dozen Molokai residents showed up along with police. A fellow Molokai resident was communicating with Milner or his crew through a two-way radio.
The Rittes said they have nothing against visitors to the Friendly Isle and that this wasn’t anything personal about Milner, who has been a somewhat controversial figure due to his large investments in American social media companies. Rather, they said that Molokai residents are just very sensitive about large ships and potential large influxes of tourists. “I think the threat was just the presence of this large ship there and being able to come and go as it pleased. And just being afraid that other ships could set precedents for more ships to come in,” said Loretta. They must have made that message loud and clear, as Milner and his crew eventually turned around and headed toward Maui.
