When you think of Australia and superyachts, of course the first thing that likely comes to mind, is Sydney Harbor, and the image of its iconic opera house. However, Australia is a big place, and Sydney is far from the only place on the continent for yacht enthusiasts. In fact, according to the local paper, the Whitsunday Times, this area is making a push to broaden its appeal to superyacht owners by building a state-of-the-art marina.

Whitsunday, or more precisely, the Whitsunday Islands, are a group of 74 archipelagos off the coast of Queensland, AU, in close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. As such, the islands have always been a tourist attraction. However, most guests arrive by plane, as dockage for boats, particularly large luxury motoryachts, was somewhat limited.

However, as the Times recently reported, that is all about to change, thanks to recent modifications to laws that previously barred yachts over a certain length from coming to the Whitsundays. With superyachts now welcome to visit, a plan to bring the region into the 21st century is being put forward.

According to the report, the Abell Point Marina is well placed to take advantage of increased superyacht visitation, and owner Paul Darrouzet has plans to build a state-of-the-art facility at the second basin of Bowen Harbour. “With the recent opening of the Whitsundays to superyachts and the enormous number of vessels travelling to and from Auckland for the next Americas Cup, demand for the facility will be strong,” said Darrouzet.

Darrouzet went on to say, “In addition, an urgent requirement for new and modern facilities from current boat owners is also rising and forecast to further increase as more Australians holiday in the beautiful Whitsunday region.” According to the Times, what Darrouzet is proposing will, “bring together all industry participants including Federal and State Governments, Whitsunday Regional Council, Ports North Corporation and other industry groups involved in training and skill development.
